MATH

Teacher Elaine Khoo

Being an ex-Head of Department for Mathematics has given me great insights to the Mathematics syllabus, curriculum design, pedagogy and assessment. These insights have enabled me to design effective lessons, diagnose student’s learning gaps and plan strategies to address them.

In my two decades of teaching, I have worked with students of different learning styles and abilities. Every student is unique, and he/she needs to be constantly recognised for his/her attempts, taste small successes and enjoy the lessons before he/she develops gradual interest, confidence and motivation.

In the design of lessons, humour and fun is a starting ingredient to lighten the learning mood. A variety of concrete and visual aids such as LEGO blocks will be used to enhance understanding of concepts. Giving time for students to think and attempt on their own grows confidence and guiding them to articulate their thinking process enhances understanding of concepts. Lastly and most importantly, repetition and constant revision aids better retention and mastery!

Over the years, I have seen and enjoyed many “aha” moments and smiles of my students’ satisfied faces when they are able to solve questions independently!
Teaching is never mundane and boring with so much interactions and challenges brought about by each student.

Every student is unique, and he/she needs to be constantly recognised for his/her attempts.

Xinle went for different trial lessons and changed tuition centres several times in P4 as we find that the materials were not challenging enough. She is very fortunate to join Tr Elaine’s Math class in P5. P5 Math is a lot more challenging and Tr Elaine explains the concept very well and tries to stretch the students. Besides that, Tr Elaine takes effort to take note of the students’ mistakes and reinforces the concept in the revision papers that she set. Xinle enjoys Tr Elaine’s lessons immensely as it is engaging and interesting. She scored almost full marks in her P5 year-end exam and some of her classmates’ parents approached me to ask for the tuition centre that she is attending. I have full confidence in Tr Elaine and believe Xinle will do well in her PSLE under her guidance. It is indeed our blessing to find such excellent tutor at the start of the crucial P5 year.

Teacher Elaine’s lessons are very fun as she let us play games relating to Math so that we can learn and play at the same time. She also gives us enough time to complete our homework. She also helps us with our school homework if we need help. My result improved by 3 ALs.

SCIENCE

Teacher Evonne Teo

Having taught Science in a mainstream school for more than a decade, I have an instinctive understanding of the critical relationship between content, pedagogy and assessment. I am a firm believer of adapting pedagogies such as leveraging on online simulations and doing hands-on experiments to enable students to understand Science concepts better. I believe in the holistic approach towards assessments and think that it is important to design tasks to balance formative and summative assessments.

It is essential to engage students through effective Science lessons. I study the learning needs of every student and tailor my teaching to meet his/her needs. I constantly develop new teaching and learning materials as well as modify existing Science programmes to ensure students learn best. I care about students’ grasp of the Science concepts and would not hesitate to spend the extra time to coach them. I communicate with parents regularly to update the learning progress of their children. This allows me to work collaboratively with parents to bring out the students’ potential to excel in Science.

The close monitoring on the implementation of my Science programmes ensures that there’s robustness in my teaching. It is important that I share my knowledge freely to enthuse students with the confidence to progress in their learning of Science. I believe in serving as an exemplary model to ignite the passion in my students towards sustaining and enhancing the discipline called Science.

I always look forward to Teacher Evonne’s Science lesson every week. She teaches very well and makes me understand Science better. In school, I was not taught how to answer open-ended questions the right way, hence I used to dislike doing open-ended questions. But after having lessons with Teacher Evonne, I could answer open-ended questions confidently. I was so happy when I got AL1 for PSLE Science. Thank you so much Teacher Evonne. 😉

Chloe Chia, Primary 5-6 Science

I enjoyed Teacher Evonne’s Science lesson very much. She demonstrates good experiments to make me understand Science concepts better. I enjoy her lesson as it is very engaging. She explains the concepts very clearly too and this makes it easy for me when I attempt the questions. Science is my favourite subject. After being taught by Teacher Evonne, my score improved from AL5 in school assessments to AL2 for PSLE.
